CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

I don’t know how long we’re staying here, but I could get used to it. I wake up to the light of day, my eyes fluttering open, and my mind instantly goes to Fiona. She isn’t shy or quiet, and her cries of pleasure fill the ship even when she’s far away, making my overwhelming need for her almost too much to deal with.

She’s as wild as she is inexperienced, and just thinking about the way her clothes cling to her curves makes my heart leap in my chest. The worst part, the one that makes this so difficult to deal with, is that I know she wants me too.

Fiona is a princess, though. The future Merati Queen. Pining for her is foolish, so I settle for avoiding her instead. I plan my days to make sure I won’t see her, and today won’t be any different. She must be kept safe and that is far more important than my desire.

I walk over to my closet and grab the first garment I see: a white shirt with a stiff collar made of light, breathable material. I throw on the same pair of black pants I always wear and open the door to make my way to the bridge, barely checking my reflection before I leave my room. Even now, it’s weird to see myself like this, my eyes different colors from cracking my head open in the crash, parts of my body made entirely of steel.

I’m distracted when I walk out, so I don’t see her standing across the corridor. Fiona is waiting for me, leaning back against a wall, her hair up in a loose bun. She smells like salt even from where I’m standing, her skin shimmering with the mark of Nereus’s touch.

She meets my gaze as the door shuts behind me, the quiet hum of the ship the only sound between us.

“I thought you’d be with Nereus,” I blurt out when she doesn’t speak. It rattles me that she manages to play it so cool when I’ve got so much more experience.

“He’s swimming,” she responds with a shrug. “I don’t get in the sea.”

“You don’t?”

She shakes her head. “You don’t seem to, either,” she says.

I wave her off. “What about Taln and Ryker?”

“Keeping him safe. That’s their job,” she says, then looks around, her facade of determination faltering for a second. “They’re not on the ship.”

“You’re safe in here. We’d definitely know if someone came aboard.”

She tilts her head to look up at me, her hazel eyes glimmering. “And you’d defend me, right?”

“From what I understand, you can defend yourself.”

She smirks, crossing her arms over her chest, and I have to stop myself from looking at her cleavage. The light purple dress she’s wearing isn’t particularly revealing, the neckline stopping right before the curve of her breasts, but I think she knows exactly what she’s doing. Every movement she makes is a dare and it takes a huge amount of effort to hold back, to stand a couple of feet away from her.
